About us

A mill on the river, a wheel in the corner

Kiln House Studio started in 2015 with one secondhand wheel and a kiln that tripped the breaker. Today it is a two-person studio, a showroom, and a small teaching space in Asheville's River Arts District.

Maren & Theo

Maren trained at Alfred University and spent six years in a production pottery in Vermont before moving south. Theo came to clay from furniture making, which is why our handles are pulled the way they are and our feet are trimmed the way they are.

We split the work the way most small studios do: Maren throws and glazes, Theo trims, loads the kiln and keeps the books. On firing days we both stay late.

Local clay

Our stoneware body comes from a single pit in Lizella, Georgia, and is mixed to our own recipe.

Glazes from scratch

No commercial glazes. Every color is weighed, mixed and tested in our own glaze room.

Reduction fired

Gas firing to cone 10 gives the iron in the clay room to bloom through the glaze.

Seconds, not landfill

Pieces with small flaws are sold from the studio shelf at kiln openings, never thrown out.

Open studio, every first Saturday

Walk the glaze room, watch a firing being unloaded and try the wheel yourself. No booking needed, just show up between 10 and 4.
